off the cuffが気になりました。cuffといえば「カフス」ですが、果たしてどのような意味になるのでしょうか。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)をみると「(話・発言などに関して)前もってあまり考えずに、思いつきで」とあります。また、LDOCEでは “an off-the-cuff remark, reply etc is one that you make without thinking about it first” と定義されています。なぜこのような言い回しをするかをWeblio英和辞典辞典で調べてみました。すると由来は、演説者が話の要点を忘れぬようにワイシャツのカフスにメモを書いていたためであることが分かりました。
トランプ氏は過去にも軍を政治利用しようとする動きを幾度か見せていました。感謝祭と聞くと楽しいイメージが湧きますが、政治的な側面から見るこの日も意味のあるに思います。(seventh-dan)
