S. Korea closes biggest dog slaughterhouse complex

South Korean officials on Thursday began to dismantle the country’s largest canine slaughterhouse complex, as animal rights activists push to end the custom of eating dog meat.

About 1 million dogs are eaten a year in South Korea, often as a summertime delicacy with the greasy red meat — invariably boiled for tenderness — believed to increase energy.

But the tradition has earned criticism abroad and has declined as the nation increasingly embraces the idea of dogs as pets instead of livestock, with eating them now something of a taboo among young South Koreans.

　greasy /gríːsi/ を取り上げます。greaseはカタカナでもグリスと使われることから、脂ののったという意味になるかと思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「1脂を塗った；脂でよごれた（べたべたした）；（悪い意味で）（髪、皮膚が）油っぽい　2（悪い意味で）（食べ物などが）脂の多い、脂っこい　3（略式）（軽べつ的）（態度、ことばが）べたべたした、お世辞たらたらの」とありました。主にマイナスの意味で使われる言葉であることがわかります。

　LDOCEには “covered in grease or oil” や “slippery” の他にも、 “too polite and friendly in a way that seems insincere or unpleasant” と定義されています。例には “a shampoo for greasy hair” が取り上げられており、シャンプーの宣伝などでよく見る「べたつく髪」はこのgreasy hairにあたるのだなと思いました。

　上記の英和辞典によると、greasy spoonで「（略式）（しばしば軽べつ的）（特に揚げ物を出す）小さな安食堂」をさすそうです。スプーンが脂にまみれる様子が想像できます。（aqua）
