Indonesia says survivors unlikely from Lion Air plane crash

A Lion Air plane crashed into the sea just minutes after taking off from Indonesia's capital on Monday, likely killing all 189 people on board. The accident was a blow to the country's aviation safety record after the lifting of bans on its airlines by the European Union and U.S.

The search and rescue effort has recovered human remains, and based on their condition, one of its top officials said they're not expecting to find any survivors. More than 300 people including soldiers, police and fishermen are involved in the grim search, retrieving aircraft debris and personal items such as a crumpled cellphone, ID cards, bags and photos from the seas northeast of Jakarta.

　slick /slík/ を取り上げます。巧みな、なめらかなという形容詞でよく知られる語ですが、ここでは名詞として用いられています。前にきているfuel と合わせて考えると、海に流れ出た燃料のことをさしていると思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「= oil slick」と記載されていました。そこで、oilの項目を確認してみると、oil slickで「水面に流出した油（slick）」とありました。

　LDOCEには “an area of oil on the surface of water or on a road” と定義されています。水面だけではなく、道路上に流れ出たものにも使うことができるようです。 “an area” という部分から、それなりの広さがある様子も伺えます。

　墜落現場とみられる海上では、機体の破片や救命胴衣、携帯電話などが見つかっています。しかし、機体の胴体部分の発見には至っていないとのことです。（aqua）
