nitty-gritty 復習

Linguisticsの授業でmorphologyについて学んでいる時にある項目の例として取り上げられていた単語を紹介します。nitty-grittyです。最初は響きのいい単語だなという印象以外浮かばず、予測を立てられませんでしたが、気になったので授業後に調べてみました。以下辞書の定義です。

Oxford Dictionary of English (2th): “(the nitty-gritty) 《informal》the most important aspects or practical details of a subject or situation”

Collins Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (8th): “if people get down to the nitty-gritty of a matter, situation, or activity, they discuss most important, basic parts of it or facts about it”

『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）：「｟略式｠[the-] （物事の）核心、本質；基本的事実」

必ず単語の前にtheが付きます。語源についてはODEによると “1960s: of unknown origin”とのことで、はっきりとはわかっていないようですが、参考として下記のサイトを載せておきます。

今受けている授業の中で個人的に一番興味のある分野がLinguisticsです。Introduction courseで、まだ基礎しか学んでいないので、日本に帰ってからもう少し学べたらと思っています。（ko-chi @ Calgary）
