Pipe bombs packed with shards of glass were intercepted en route to several prominent Democrats, including Hillary Clinton and former President Barack Obama, in an unnerving wave that deepened political tensions and fears two weeks before national midterm elections.
None of the seven bombs detonated and nobody was hurt as authorities in New York; Washington, D.C.; Florida and California seized the suspicious packages.
One of the explosives was sent to CNN, which prompted the evacuation of the Time Warner Center in Manhattan where the news outlet has its offices.

shard /ʃάɚd/ を取り上げます。sharpと似ているところから、尖ったものをさしているのではないかと思いました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第4版 大修館書店）で引くと「1（正式）（陶器などの）破片 2（虫）（甲虫の）翅鞘」とありました。
LDOCEには “a sharp piece of broken glass, metal etc” と定義されており、例として “a shard of pottery” が取り上げられています。同じように破片を表す語としてfragmentが思い浮かんだので、違いはあるのか見てみると、 “a small piece of something that has broken off or that comes from something larger” と説明されていました。shardの方はsharpという言葉が入っている分、鋭さが強調されていることがわかります。
