今回紹介する単語はsport /spˈɔɚt/ です。名詞で「スポーツ, 競技」という意味が思い浮かびますが、ここでは動詞として使われています。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）には他動詞で「…を見せびらかす」とありました。Merriam-Websterは “to display or wear usually ostentatiously” と定義しています。これではしっくりきません。他の辞書でも調べたのですが、いい表現が見つかりませんでした。

自身の推測として「髪は切っていたが、髭は伸びたままだ」と訳し、「見せびらかしているように思えるほど髭が生えている」ということを伝えているのではないでしょうか。
