blurt out 復習
今回は自分の英単語帳の中から抜粋した句動詞を紹介します。
blurt outです。これはCanadianの友人らとお喋りしていた際にさっとメモに記した表現なのですが、初めの予測としては 動詞blur「ぼやける、あいまいにする、（比喩的）傷つける」とout「広がって」から「失態をする」といった訳になるかと思いました。以下で確認していきます。
まず Cambridge English Dictionaryで定義を調べると、“to say something suddenly without thinking, usually because you are excited or nervous: He blurted everything out about the baby, though we’d agree to keep it a secret for a while.” とありました。
次に、The Free Dictionaryを引くと、“to say something unexpectedly, often at an inopportune time or with the wrong audience (as of a private or secret matter).” となっています。
