『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「長円(楕円)形の、省略の、(省略された言葉が多くて)分かりにくい」とあります。また、LDOCEでは “having the shape of an ellipse” “elliptical speech or writing is difficult to understand because more is meant than is actually said” と定義されています。Oxford Living DictionariesをみるとEarly 18th century: from Greek elleiptikos ‘defective’, from elleipein ‘leave out, fall short’.と由来が載っていました。
