Hokkaido hot spring uses humor to lure tourists in wake of quake disaster

Hokkaido's Tokachigawa Onsen hot spring is hoping tickling tourists' funny bones will tempt them back in the wake of an earthquake and blanket blackout that hit Japan's northernmost prefecture on Sept. 6.

The laugh campaign was launched in the town of Otofuke in central Hokkaido on Oct. 18 with the unveiling of humorous tourism posters, which began going up the same day.

The posters created by the Tokachigawa Onsen Tourism Association and Tokachigawa Onsen hotel cooperative association play on the hot spring community's tough times, featuring self-deprecating catch phrases and photos of hotel staff with too much time on their hands.

　self-deprecating /sɛ́lfdɛ́prəkèɪtɪŋ/ を取り上げます。ポスターの内容をふまえると、自虐的なという意味になるのではないかと思いました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第4版　大修館書店）で調べると「（通例限定）自己を卑下した、控えめな」とありました。

　LDOCEには “trying to make your own abilities or achievements seem unimportant” と定義されており、自分の能力だけではなく、成し遂げたことに対しても取るに足らないものだと捉えるように促すことがわかります。例として “self-deprecating humour” が取り上げられています。

　同英和辞典によると、動詞のdeprecate /déprəkèɪt/ に「1 …に（間接的に）不賛成を唱える、（…することを）非難する（doing）　2 = depreciate」という意味があります。depreciate /dɪpríːʃièɪt/ については「（人、価値など）を（世評以下に）見くびる、軽視する」と記載されており、世間での評判よりも下に見る様子を表すことが確認できました。（aqua）
