今回取り上げる語は、blinkered /ˈblɪŋkəd/ です。文脈から「後進的な」と推測しましたが、うまく訳をつけられませんでした。以下で意味等を確認していきます。
まず意味を Cambridge Dictionary でみると、“A blinkered person is unable or unwilling to understand other people's beliefs, and blinkered opinions or ways of behaving show someone is unable or unwilling to understand other people” であり、LDOCE には “having a limited view of a subject, or refusing to accept or consider different ideas” と定義されていました。
次に語源を ONLINE ETYMOLOGY DICTIONARY でみると、“in the figurative sense, 1849, from horses wearing blinkers to limit the range of their vision” とあります。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第3版、三省堂書店)で blinker を調べると、「(自動車の)方向指示器、(馬の)目隠し革」とあり、後者の語義から今回の意味がきているといえます。
