　BBCでも以下の記事が取り上げられていました。

A rare white tiger has mauled a zookeeper to death in its enclosure at a zoo in Japan, officials say.

Akira Furusho, 40, was found bleeding from the neck in the tiger's cage at the zoo in the southern city of Kagoshima. He was taken to hospital and pronounced dead.

The male tiger, named Riku, was sedated with a tranquiliser before rescue workers and police arrived.

　pen /pén/ を取り上げます。この単語を読んだ時、日本語としても使われているあのペンしか思い浮かびませんでした。しかし、『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第四版、大修館書店)で調べてみると「（家畜などを入れる小さな）おり、囲い、おりの中の動物」や「貯蔵」といった意味があることが分かりました。また「〈動物・人〉を狭い所［おり］に入れる、閉じ込める」といった動詞の意味もあります。LDOCEにはa small piece of land enclosed by a fence to keep farm animals inと定義されていました。

　語源は古英語で「閉じ込める」といった意味のpennやpenneであるという説や「固定する、動けなくする」という意味のpinnやpegであるといった様々な説があるようです。(rain)
