Sugar-free sake solves problem of boozy breath, says top maker

A solution for the age-old problem of drinkers’ boozy breath has been found, according to leading sake maker Gekkeikan Sake Co.--and it has been right under their nose for years.

The Kyoto-based company said Oct. 9 that it found its zero-sugar sake is less likely to cause the breath to reek of alcohol than most drinks, and it received a patent for the discovery on Sept. 21.

Gekkeikan set up two situations to compare in an experiment to prove the finding. In one, participants drank 600 millileters of “junmaishu” pure rice sake with 15 percent alcohol content, and in the other, participants drank the same quantity of sugar-free sake containing 13.5 percent alcohol.

　right under one’s noseを取り上げます。直訳で考えると、鼻の真下となりますが、ここではどのような意味になるのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると “(right) under …’s (very) nose “ または “(right) under the (very) nose of …” で「（略式）…の面前（なのに気づかないで）；…に対して公然と」とありました。

　LDOCEには “(right) under somebody’s nose” の形で “if something bad or illegal happens under someone’s nose, they do not notice it even though it is happening very close to them and they should have noticed it” や “if something is right under someone’s nose, they cannot see it even though it is very close to them” と定義されています。悪いことが起きていても気がつかないことや、近すぎて見えないことを表すのに用いられることがわかります。

　日本語には「目と鼻の先」という言葉がありますが、英語にも同じような意味を表す表現があることを押さえておきたいです。（aqua）
