Tokyo firm to send rovers to moon via SpaceX by ’21

Tokyo-based space startup ispace, inc. plans to launch a spacecraft for a moon landing by 2021 using a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, having concluded a relevant contract with the U.S. rocket company, the Japanese firm announced Wednesday.

Under the plan, the Minato Ward, Tokyo-based startup is scheduled to test the technology needed to put the spacecraft, currently under development, into the moon’s orbit in mid-2020 and to have it land on the moon in mid-2021.

The 3.5-meter-high, about 350-kilogram lander will carry two rovers — weighing about 10 kilograms — that are supposed to probe the moon’s surface for two weeks.

rover /róʊvɚ/ に注目しました。月の表面を調査する目的で使われると述べられていることから、探査機のことをさしていると思いました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第4版　大修館書店）で調べると「1（文）流浪者、放浪者；遊人　2惑星（衛星）探査車　3（アーチェリー）臨時的（まと）；遠的（まと）　4（クローケー）全鉄門を通過して決勝標に当たっていない球；（その）プレーヤー」といくつか意味があることがわかりました。ここでは2つ目の「惑星（衛星）探査車」が適します。

　Merriam-Websterには “a vehicle for exploring the surface of an extraterrestrial body (such as the moon or Mars)” と定義されていました。

　Online Etymology Dictionaryで語源を見てみると、 “sea-robber, pirate” や “from Middle Dutch rover, predator, plunder” などと説明されており、もとは「物を盗む」という言葉からきていることがわかりました。そこから、調査によって情報や資料となるものを持ち帰ったりする意味にも広がり、上記のように探査車という意味で使われるようになったのではないかと思いました。（aqua）
