　今回取り上げる語は、snigger /ˈsnɪɡə/ です。ウィズダム英和辞典によれば snigger は主に英国で使われ、米国では snicker と綴ります。文脈と「鼻」を表す sn- があることから「鼻で嘲け笑う」と推測できますが、実際はどうなのでしょうか。以下で確認していきます。
　まず意味を Cambridge Dictionary でみると、“to laugh at someone or something in a silly and often unkind way” とあり、LDOCE には “to laugh quietly in a way that is not nice at something which is not supposed to be funny” と定義されていました。
　次に語源を OED でみると、“Early 18th century: later variant of snicker” とあったので、snicker を ONLINE ETYMOLOGY DICTIONARY で確認したところ “"laugh in a half-suppressed way," 1690s, possibly of imitative origin, similar to Dutch snikken "to gasp, sob” とありました。
　最後にチョコバーで有名な Snickers との関係について調べてました。この由来をWikipedia でみると “In 1930,[1] Mars introduced Snickers, named after the favorite horse of the Mars family.” とあり、どうも馬の名前が由来のようです。OED に snicker の定義で “(of a horse) whinny” とあるので、マーズ家は馬の鳴き声からこう名付けたと考えることができます。
