『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）には「へとへとに疲れさせる, 厳しい」と記載されています。
語源をOEDで調べたところ “Mid 19th century: from the verb gruel ‘exhaust, punish’, from an old phrase get one's gruel” とあり、exhaustやpunishが由来になっています。
以上のことから記事には「過密なスケジュール」といった意味になるでしょう。
