Australia offers reward amid strawberry scare

An Australian state has offered a large reward for information after sewing needles were found in strawberries sold in supermarkets, in what the federal health minister described as a “vicious crime.”

The issue came to light last week when a man was taken to hospital with stomach pains after eating the fresh produce bought at a supermarket in the state of Queensland.

Since then, people have posted on social media photos of other strawberries with small metal pins stuck into them.

punnet /pˈʌnɪt/ を取り上げます。直前でsmall plastic boxesと説明されており、果物を売る時に使われる小さい箱状の容器であることがわかります。LDOCEで調べると “a small square box used to hold soft fruits such as strawberries” と定義されていました。British Englishとあることから、主にイギリス英語で用いられる言葉のようです。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第4版　大修館書店）で見てみると「（英）（果物を売るための）小さな木製のかご（1杯分）」とありました。記事ではプラスチック製だと述べられていますが、木でできた入れ物もあることがわかりました。

　画像を検索してみると、日本のスーパーでもよく見かけるプラスチック製の容器や薄い帯状の木を編み込んで作られたかご、持ち手がついているバスケットなどがありました。（aqua）
