hog /hˈɔːg, hάg｜hˈɔg/ を取り上げます。以前この単語は取り上げたことがあるのですが、その時は名詞で「豚」という意味があることを知りました。今回の記事では動詞として使われており、気になったので再度取り上げたいと思います。
『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、動詞の項目には「〈場所など〉をひとり占めする」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“to keep, use, or have all of something that should be shared”と定義されています。LDOCEの定義を見る限り、ネガティブなイメージを持つ単語であるように思いますが、記事にはそういった印象はないので、使用する状況によって変わってくるようです。(Blue Sky)
