trivialize 復習

今回の記事で気になったのはtrivialize /tríviəlὰɪz/ です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』を参照すると「…をつまらなくする; …を軽視する; …を矮小化する」とありました。LDOCEでは“to make something seem less important or serious than it really is – used to show disapproval”と定義されています。

次に『オックスフォード新英英辞典』を引くと、語源はラテン語のtriviumからきていることがわかりました。triviumの定義として“《historical》an introductory course at a medieval university involving the study of grammar, rhetoric, and logic.”とあり、中世の大学における3学科を指しています。由来はearly 19th cent. : from Latin, literally ‘place where three roads meet’, from tri- ‘three’+via ‘road’からきていることが確認できました。ここから「ありふれた，つまらない」といったニュアンスが生まれたのではないかと思います。(Kiwi girl)
