取り上げる表現は、”abate”です。文脈から、「（洪水などが）収まる」という意味だと推測しました。『ウィズダム英和辞典』（第２版）によると、「〈あらし・雨・風などが〉弱まる，やむ」とありました。また、同義で”die down”という表現も一緒に載っていました。
そこで、LODCEで”abate”と”die down”を調べてみました。
“abate”: “to become less strong or decrease”
“die down”: “if something dies down, it becomes less strong, active, or violent”
今回の台風２０号の上陸によって被害が拡大しないこと祈ります。(Morihiro)
