Nagoya teen arrested for making powerful explosives

A college freshman was arrested on suspicion of making powerful explosives at his home here, including a dangerously unstable type used in the 2015 terror attacks in Paris, the Aichi prefectural police announced Aug. 20.

Police said the suspect, 19, admitted to the allegations.

“I was interested in bombs and wanted to test their power,” the student was reported as saying during the police investigation. “I was aware that one of the explosives I manufactured had been used in the terror attacks.”

Police believe that the suspect burned the powders in order to detonate TATP. TATP is an unstable and deadly explosive, blowing up when friction is applied or on impact when the powder is dry.

detonate /déṭənèɪt/ を取り上げます。文脈から、爆発させるという意味になるのではないかと思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「（大音響とともに）（…）を爆発させる」「爆発する」とありました。

　Merriam-Websterには “to explode or to cause (something, such as a bomb) to explode” と定義されています。

　製造が確認された「過酸化アセトン」以外にも、大学生の自宅からは国内で違法製造や所持が確認されたことがない「四硝酸エリスリトール」という爆薬も見つかったとのことです。（aqua）
