duration 復習

Q: Do you think elementary school students can benefit from Skype lessons? If so, how long do you think the lesson should be and how can the teacher see or monitor their writing progress?

Skype lessons are very similar to private lessons in that the teacher needs to be entirely focused on the student for the duration of the lesson. Since the student also needs to focus on the teacher, student motivation is an absolute necessity. I would suggest considering the following activities for Skype lessons with young students:

　今回取り上げるのはduration /d(j)ʊréɪʃən/ です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店）には「（時間の）継続;存続[持続]時間」や「当分の間、長い期間（にわたって）」や「その間中」と記載されていました。またLDOCEにはthe length of time that something continuesと定義されていました。

　私は「期間」と聞いた時にperiodを思い浮かべました。LDOCEで違いを調べてみたところ、periodはa particular length of time with a beginning and an endと記載されていました。終わりと始まりがあるかどうかが違いなのではないかと思います。

　私は体験したことがないのですが、母校では「スカイプ英会話」をほかのクラスでおこなっていました。チャレンジしてみた友達が楽しそうに感想を言ってくれたのを思い出し、やってみればよかったなと少し後悔しています。（rain）
