今回取り上げるのはhiggledy-piggledy / hígldipígldi/ です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店）には「乱雑な[に]、めちゃくちゃな[に]」と記載されていました。またLDOCEにはthings that are higgledy-piggledy are mixed together in an untidy wayと定義されていました。
piggledyは「豚小屋、不潔な場所」という意味のようです。このことが語源となっているということも分かりました。
英語にはhiggledy-piggledyや「大変素晴らしい」という意味のsuper-duperなど、韻を踏んだ表現がたくさん存在するようです。（rain）
