今回取り上げるのはturf war /tˈɚːf wˈɔɚ/です。turfは「芝」という意味しか思い浮かびません。一体どのような意味なのでしょうか。手持ちの辞書には記載がなかったのでLDOCEで調べてみたところa fight or argument over the areas or things you think belong to youと定義されていました。
turfを『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店）で調べてみると「芝」という意味の他に「（不良・やくざ・動物などの）縄張り、シマ」といった意味がありました。また、LDOCEにはan area that you think of as being your ownとありました。ちなみに「芝」などという意味は基本的にイギリス英語であるとも記載されていました。(rain)
