Japan's Justice Ministry plans to increase the number of immigration officials by several hundred ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

今回気になったのは、surveillance /sɚvéɪləns/ です。意味が予測出来なかったため、調べてみました。LDOCEには、“when the police, army etc watch a person or place carefully because they may be connected with criminal activities” とあり、『ウィズダム英和辞典』には、「（容疑者・囚人などの）監視、見張り」と載っていました。
次に、ODEで語源を調べてみると、“early 19th cent. : from French, from sur- ‘over’ +veiller ‘watch’ (from Latin vigilare ‘keep watch’).” と定義されていました。
