“Zannen na Ikimono Jiten” (Encyclopedia of unfortunate creatures), a popular children’s book series, will be adapted into an animated TV series.

The series has more than 2 million copies in print, with the first installment recently ranked first in the list of popular books selected by grade-schoolers and the second installment also ranked fourth.

The series is produced by anime studio Fanworks Inc., which is known for “Tiny Twin Bears: Lulu & Lolo” and “Aggretsuko.”

　今回取り上げるのはgrade-schoolerです。手持ちの辞書になかったのでインターネットで調べてみたところ、a pupil in a grade school.と定義されていました。

「小学校」と聞くとelementary school/ primary schoollしか思い浮かびませんでしたが、grade (-)schoolという表現もあるようです。LDOCEには"an elementary / primary school"と記載されていました。

　またgrade schoolはアメリカ英語であるとも記載されていました。そこから派生したのが小学校に通う児童、つまりgrade-schoolerです。(rain)
