husk 復習
It’s rare I watch a video on Facebook to the end. My online attention span has been whittled to a husk by a crowd-pleasing parade of clips of babies doing funny things with peanut butter and dogs being very good boys, and there are only so many seconds of that before you get the idea. 今回取り上げる語は、husk /hˈʌsk/ です。「殻、外皮」といった意味を持つ語ですが、調べていくうちにそれ以外の意味もあったので、以下でみていきます。
まず意味を LDOCE でみると、“the useless outer part of something that remains after the important or useful part is gone or has been used” と定義されていました。また、『ウィズダム英和辞典』(三省堂書店、第3版)には「(1)外皮、殻、(2)かす、価値のない外側の部分、(3)やる気をなくした人」と乗っていました。
次に語源を OED でみると、“Late Middle English: probably from Low German hūske ‘sheath’, literally ‘little house’.” とありました。
以上のことから、husk は「価値のないもの、つまらないもの」といった意味を持つことがわかりました。(OkaUchi)
