Canadian crew saw no treasure on sunken Russian warship

取り上げる単語はfuelです。名詞で「燃料」を意味する単語ですが、今回は-ing形で用いられているため、別の意味を表すと考えました。文脈から内容は理解できましたが、しっくりくる日本語が浮かばなかったので調べてみました。

まず『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）で引いてみると動詞の第二義に「〈議論など〉をたたきつける、〈好ましくないこと〉を助長する；〈不安・怒りなど〉あおる」との記載がありました。また名詞の第二義には「（議論などを）たたきつけるもの、（怒りなどを）あおるもの」を意味し、add fuel to Oで「〈論争など〉を激化させる、〈状況など〉を悪化させる」を表すと載っていました。さらに例文から「火に油を注ぐ、状況をさらに悪くする」はadd fuel to the fire [flame]で表現可能であることがわかりました。

次にCollis COBULD Advanced Learner’s Dictionary(8th)を参照してみると“To fuel a situation means to make it become worse or more intense”との定義が記されていました。またadd fuel toも一つのフレーズとして記載があり、“If something adds fuel to a conflict or debate, or adds fuel to the fire, it makes the conflict or debate more intense”と定義されています。

以上のことから記事では「憶測に拍車をかける、憶測を煽る」という意味で用いられたということがわかりました。
