scorching 復習

今回はscorching /skɔ́rtʃɪŋ/ を紹介します。文脈から暑さを伝えるための形容詞だと思い、「焼きつけるような」という意味を推測しました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）で調べると「焼き焦がすような, 焼きつくような」「強烈な, 痛烈な」でした。例には a scorching hot day で「酷暑の日」とありました。またOEDには “Very hot.” と定義されています。
つまり、毎年とは異なる暑さを表していることがわかりました。

他にも暑さを強調する表現として、extremely hot, too hot, heatwaveなどがあります。

ある新聞記事を読んでいて、この暑さを気象庁の定義で表すことができないそうです。それほど暑いというのは異常だと思いました。
