archipelago 復習

今回はarchipelago / ὰɚkəpéləgòʊ / です。単語の発音から、語源が気になったので調べてみました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）では「群島, 諸国」とありました。またthe Japanese archipelagoで「日本列島」の意味で、本文ではこのように使われています。
またOEDで確認したところ “An extensive group of islands.” また “A sea of stretch of water having many islands.” と定義されていました。

続いて語源を調べたところ、イタリア語で「主要な海」の意でエーゲ海を示していました。さらに詳しく調べると、ギリシャ語のarkhein（支配）＋pelagos（海）で成り立っている語であることがわかりました。また、OEDにも “Early 16th century: from Italian arcipelago, from Greek arkhi- ‘chief’ + pelagos ‘sea’. The word was originally used as a proper name ( the Archipelago ‘the Aegean Sea’): the general sense arose because the Aegean Sea is notable for its large numbers of islands.” と説明されています。

自分の体調管理をしっかりするため、喉が乾く前に水分補給をする、登校時には無理をせずバスを使うようにしています。
