Eel lovers get their fill despite higher prices

Many people queued to buy eels at stores throughout the country on Friday, the Day of the Ox, when the nutritious food for extra energy is customarily eaten in sizzling summer heat.

Kabayaki grilled eels enjoy enduring popularity, despite rising prices this year due to sluggish catches of young eels used for farming.

“The dish is something of a luxury, but I want to eat it at least once a year to get through the heat,” said a man in his 50s.

sizzle /sízl/ を取り上げます。summer heatが後ろにくることから、厳しい暑さを表していると思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）には「じゅーじゅー（しゅーしゅー）いう」とありました。ものが焼ける時などの音を表すようです。他には “sizzling hot” で「うだるように暑い」という例が載っていました。

　LDOCEには “to make a sound like water falling on hot metal” と定義されています。勢いよく水分が蒸発する音が想像できます。

　語源を調べると、goo辞書には「1603　擬声語」とあり、物音からできた言葉であることがわかりました。（aqua）
