diarrhea 復習
西日本を襲った豪雨からもう一週間が経ちました。被害地域では多くの問題が立ちはだかっています。

今回はdiarrhea / dὰɪəríːə / を紹介します。初見の単語なので調べてみました。
まずOxford English Dictionaryには “A condition in which faeces are discharged from the bowels frequently and in a liquid form.” と定義されています。
確認のため『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）では「[医] 下痢」とありました。また、この単語は堅い言い方なので、一般的にはthe runsと表現できます。
続いて語源を調べたところ、ギリシャ語でdia「…を通る」＋rhein「流れる」が組み合わさり「流れ通ること」の意味になります。ここから「腸を通り抜ける」＝「下痢」の意味になるのではないでしょうか。
