Chiba man gets life sentence for murder of Vietnamese girl

A former leader of a parents’ group at an elementary school was handed a life sentence on July 6 for sexually assaulting and murdering a 9-year-old Vietnamese girl.

Yasumasa Shibuya, 47, of Matsudo, Chiba Prefecture, had pleaded not guilty to the charges and is expected to appeal the Chiba District Court’s ruling.

　前にあるcruelと合わせて考えると残忍な様子を表していると思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で引くと「1（動物）冷血の、変温の」　2冷酷な、血も涙もない　3（略式）冷え症の、寒がりの」とありました。へびなどの変温動物の「変温」もこれで表すことができるようです。

LDOCEには “not showing or involving any emotions or pity for other people’s suffering” や “a cold-blooded animal, such as a snake, has a body temperature that changes with the temperature of the air or ground around it” と定義されています。

　上記の英和辞典によると、反意語はwarm-bloodedで「（動物）温血の、定温の」となります。（aqua）
