Gray, the weak link of a five-man rotation that includes two rookies, allowed six runs in only two and one-third innings. A first-inning grand slam by Rafael Devers set the tone for another lopsided home loss to Boston that Gray started.

　lopsided /ˈlɑp.saɪ.dɪd/ に注目しました。『ジーニアス英和辞典第5版』(大修館) によると「いびつな、一方に偏った、不均衡な」といった意味があります。『ケンブリッジ英英辞典』をひらくと “with one side bigger, higher, etc. than the other; not equally balanced” 片方が大きかったり小さかったりして全体のバランスが取れなくなる様を表していると窺えます。
　goo 辞書によると lopsided は「(勢いよく) 切り落とす、切り取る」といった意味のある “lop” /lάp/ と「片側に、片方に」といったニュアンスのある “side” から出来ていることがわかりました。つまり、「片側だけを切り落とす、切り取る」という均衡の取れない様を口語では「いびつな、一方に偏った」と用いられるようになったと推察できます。

　現在ニューヨーク・メッツがナショナルリーグの中で成績が最下位で、リーグの中でも最低勝率 (4割) を記録するなど残念な結果となってしまいました。(Happidra)
