eligibility 復習

　お茶の水女子大学が2020年からトランスジェンダーの学生を受け入れるようです。

Transgender students who identify as female but have not changed their legal sex will be able to enroll in one of the two state-run women-only universities from fiscal 2020.

　取り上げるのはeligibility / èlɪdʒəbíləṭi /です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版,大修館書店）によると「〔…に対する〕適任〔性〕,適格性,被選挙資格」と記載されていました。また、LDOCEにはeligibleの名詞形であるとありました。eligibleはsomeone who is eligible for something is able or allowed to do it, for example because they are the right ageやan eligible man or woman would be good to marry because they are rich, attractive, and not marriedと定義されていました。ちなみにeligibleは過去のブログでも取り上げられていました。

　語源はラテン語で「選ばれた」という意味のeligibilisだそうです。-ligi-が「選ぶ」という意味を持つということもわかりました。(rain)
