Nihon Univ. panel finds football coaches responsible

A third-party panel set up by Nihon University found Friday former head coach Masato Uchida and former assistant coach Tsutomu Inoue responsible for a dangerous tackle by a member of the university’s American football team.

Uchida and Inoue ordered the hit that injured a Kwansei Gakuin University quarterback during a match on May 6, the panel said in an interim report. The tackle was intended to injure him, it said.

The two former coaches were apparently not repentant during hearings, Mitsuhiro Katsumaru, a lawyer and head of the panel, told a press conference in Tokyo.

　repentant /rɪpénṭənt/ を取り上げます。接頭辞のreから推測しようとしましたが、難しかったのでさっそく調べてみました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）には「（格式）後悔する、遺憾に思う；悔い改める」とありました。

　LDOCEには “sorry for something wrong that you have done” と定義されています。自分のしてしまったことに対して反省する様子を表すようです。

　動詞の形のrepent /rɪpént/ は「（格式）後悔する、悔やむ、（罪などを）悔い改める（of, for）」という意味で “He repented of his early marriage.” 「彼は若くして結婚したことを後悔した。」などように用いられることがわかりました。（『ライトハウス英和辞典』）（aqua）
