pander 復習

　今回取り上げる語は、pander /pˈændɚ/ です。文脈からあまり好ましい意味でないことが推測できます。以下で意味等を確認していきます。
　まず意味を LDOCE でみると、pander to A で “to give someone anything they want in order to please them, even if it seems unreasonable or unnecessary – used to show disapproval” とあり、OED には “Gratify or indulge (an immoral or distasteful desire or taste or a person with such a desire or taste)” と定義されていました。
　次に語源を OED でみると、“Late Middle English (as a noun): from Pandare, the name of a character in Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde (see Pandarus). The verb dates from the early 17th century.” とありました。
　以上のことから、pander は「(悪事などの)手助けをする、つけ込む」という意味を持つことがわかりました。(OkaUchi)
