今回取り上げる語は、equitable /ˈɛkwɪtəb(ə)l/ です。この語は「公正な、公平な、平等の」という意味を持ちます。今回疑問に思ったことは基本語彙である equal との差異です。そもそも equal との違いはあるのでしょうか。以下で確認していきます。
まず equitable と equal それぞれの定義を Cambridge Dictionary で確認すると、前者は “treating everyone fairly and in the same way” とあり、後者は “the same in amount, number, or size” “the same in importance and deserving the same treatment” とありました。また、OED に前者は “Valid in equity as distinct from law” と法律関係の意味も載っていました。
