The annual Music Day started in France in the 1980s. Musicians performed in the streets on the summer solstice to the delight of spectators, who could listen free of charge.
According to the action committee, Music Day events are currently held in more than 100 countries.

復習程度の単語なのですが、solstice / sάlstɪs / を紹介します。sol-なので「太陽」に関係している単語だと思いました。
まずOxford English Dictionaryには “Either of two times in the year, the summer solstice and winter solstice, when the sun reaches its highest or point the sky at noon, by the longest and shortest days.” と定義されていました。ここから「太陽の位置」のことだとわかります。
確認のため『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）で調べると「至（太陽が赤道からまた北または南に最も遠く離れる時）；至点」とありました。なのでthe summer solstice「夏至」、またthe winter solstice「冬至」となります。
solsticeの語源は、ラテン語のsolstitiumから由来しています。これは「太陽」を表すsolと動詞sistere「静止する」から成り立っています。
