Scan reveals painting hidden under Picasso masterpiece

Pablo Picasso's 1902 masterpiece, “Mother and Child by the Sea," was painted over another work and a page from a French newspaper, research shows.

The finding was confirmed by state-of-the-art technology.

“Mother and Child by the Sea,” owned by the Pola Museum of Art in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, is regarded as one of Picasso’s landmark works from his Blue Period early in his career, when he predominantly used shades of blue.

“It was known that the young and broke Picasso used to paint new works over others, and this has been scientifically confirmed once again,” said Keiko Imai, chief curator of the museum.

　state-of-the-artを取り上げます。technologyが後ろにくることから、何か特別な技術のことをさしているのではないかと思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「最新（式）の、最先端技術を用いた」とありました。

　LDOCEには “using the most modern and recently developed methods, materials, or knowledge” と定義されています。

　artと聞くとまず思い浮かぶのが芸術や美術ですが、他にも「技術、技芸；こつ、熟練」（『ライトハウス英和辞典』）といった意味があることがわかりました。今回は芸術のartとかけてこの表現が用いられているのだろうと思われます。（aqua）
