『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「(...との間の)小競り合い、紛争、ちょっとした言い争い、...と小競り合いをする」とありました。また、LDOCEでは “a fight between small groups of soldiers, ships etc, especially one that happens away from the main part of a battle – used in news reports” “a short argument, especially between political or sports opponents” と定義されていました。
goo辞書を参考にすると、中期英語の “skirmysshe” に由来することが分かりました。
日本の新幹線における事件は、普段過ごしている中では、あまり見聞きしないもののように思います。それ故、こういった事件が私たちに与える恐怖というのは強烈なものがあります。鉄道関係において、現段階でセキュリティが強化されているとは言えないところもあるので、今回の事件を機に改めて見直す必要があると強く感じました。(seventh-dan)
