取り上げる単語はrefurbish / rìːfˈɚːbɪʃ /です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第4版,大修館書店）には「…を再び磨く,磨き直す;…を新たに改造する,…を改装する;…を再び明るく［新しく］する,…を刷新する」とありました。またLDOCEにはto decorate and repair something such as a building or office in order to improve its appearanceやto change and improve a plan, idea, or skillと記載されていました。

furbishは「…をぴかぴかに磨く［研ぐ］」や「〈知識・技術など〉を新たにする」や「〈古くなった物〉を見ばえよくする」と言う意味があるそうです。このことからrenovateよりも規模の小さいものであることがわかりました。（rain）
