 インターネット上にヘイトスピーチを匿名で投稿した男性が書類送検されました。

The first criminal case regarding anonymous hate speech on the Internet is heading to court after police sent papers to prosecutors detailing a man’s violent and racist threats on Twitter to a female anti-hate speech campaigner.

Appearing on the verge of tears, she said, “Sensing danger, I had to take a separate seat from my child on a bus (to protect them). I felt like I wanted to give up on life, but my child and other people close to me kindly supported me.”

 今回取り上げるのはon the verge of / ɑn ðə vˈɚːdʒ (ə)v /です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第四版,大修館書店)によると「<状態・行為>の間際に,…の寸前で;今にも…しようとして」とありました。またLDOCEにはto be at the point where something is about to happenと記載されていました。「(場所などの)縁,端,へり,はずれ;境界,境」といった意味がvergeにあるので、そこから転じてできたものであると考えられます。on the brink [ point ] ofも同様の意味だそうです。また、be about toという表現もあると思ったので、違いを調べてみました。be about toの方が「直前の」という意味合いが強いという解説を多く見ました。(rain)
