Lava from the erupting Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island flowed toward a geothermal power plant on Monday as workers scrambled to shut it down to prevent the uncontrollable release of toxic gases.

It was the latest danger from Mt. Kilauea’s eruption, which geologists say is among the worst events in a century from one of the world’s most active volcanoes.

The Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV) plant, which provides about 25 percent of power on the Big Island, has been closed since shortly after the eruptions began May 3 and some 60,000 gallons (227,124 liters) of flammable pentane used in the plant’s turbines have already been relocated.

　billow /bíloʊ/ を取り上げます。空に向かって有毒ガスなどが立ち上る様子を表しているのだろうと予想しました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「1（帆などが）（風などで）ふくらむ（out） 2（煙などが）流れ出る、広がる」とありました。名詞として使われる場合は「（煙、炎、波などのような）うねり（of）、（文語）大波」という意味になるようです。

　LDOCEには “if something made of cloth billows, it moves in the wind” や “if a cloud or smoke billows, it rises in a round mass” と定義されています。

　語源を調べると、goo辞書には「古ノルド語 bylgja 波」とあり、波を意味する言葉からきていることがわかりました。（aqua）
