　今回調べたのはimpoverish / ɪmpάv(ə)rɪʃ /です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版,大修館書店）には「〈人を〉貧乏にする」や「…を低下させる,貧弱にする」という意味であるとの記載がありました。また、LDOCEにはto make someone very poorやto make something worse in qualityとありました。veryとあるのでpoorの度合いが高いときに使われる単語であることがわかります。また、to makeと記述があることからわかるようにimpoverishedと-edで使われる場合は、外的要因により貧困に陥ってしまった場合に使われることが多いようです。特に戦争などの外的要因のときに使われるとの記載がありました。

　「…にする」という意味のim-と「貧しい」という意味のpovertyに動詞をつくる接尾辞の-ishからできた単語であることがわかりました。(rain)
