pound the pavement 復習

語学学校の授業(listening and note-taking)の中でオバマ前大統領のvictory speechを聞きました。その中から拾った表現を紹介します。

pound the pavementです。先生には “walk on the road (doing some activity, going place to place)” という意味であると教えていただきました。

定義を確認します。

Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English Online: “to work very hard to get something, especially a job, by going to a lot of different places”

Collins Dictionary.com: [slang] “to walk the streets, as in looking for work”

『ジーニアス英和辞典」第5版（大修館）pound [hit] the pavementで「（職探しに）歩き回る」

まとめるとpound the pavement と hit the pavementは同じ意味であり、「（特に職探しのために）歩き回る」といった意味になることがわかりました。

Collins Dictionary.comには“slang”の文字があったのですが、大統領がvictory speechで使うような表現なので、かなりかしこまった状況以外ではあまり気にすることはないのではないかと考えました。下にスピーチのURLが貼ってあるので是非参照してみてください。(ko-chi @ Calgary)
