語源は「戦争」と言う意味であるラテン語のbellumです。bell-のつく単語は戦争などに関係する単語になるということがわかりました。同じような作りの単語としてrebellionなどが挙げられます。

ちなみに、ローマ神話に出てくる戦争の女神はBellonaという名前で、これもbellumが由来となってつけられた名前だそうです。（rain）
