surrogacy 復習

LGBTQ people report facing additional barriers to requesting and taking leave for common life events such as starting a family through childbirth, surrogacy, adoption or foster care; caring for a loved one with a serious medical condition; and managing one’s own health. 今回取り上げるのはsurrogacy / sə́ːrəgəsi / です。接頭辞sur-から「上の，超えて」のニュアンスの意味になるかと予測しましたが違いました。surはsubがrの前にくるときの異形のようで、「下の，副〜」というように「〜の代わりに,〜の代理で」といった意味合いになります。またインターネットによるとrogacyはラテン語のrogare(=to ask: 求める)からきていることが確認できました。すでに意味は明白になってきていますが『ジーニアス英和辞典』でsurrogacyを引くと「代理母制（度）(surrogate motherhood [mothering]」と記載されています。またCambridge Dictionaryでは“the action of a woman having a baby for another woman who is unable to do so herself”と定義されています。(Kiwi girl)
