Star of final Aoi Festival of Heisei Era prepares for May 15 big day

A purification ceremony was held May 4 for the star of this year's Aoi Festival, one of the three major festivals in the historic city.

Shiho Sakashita, a 23-year-old company employee who lives in Kyoto's Sakyo Ward, performed the "Misogi no Gi" (purification ceremony) at Kamigamojinja shrine, a World Cultural Heritage site in Kita Ward.

Sakashita will serve as the Saiodai, the principal figure in the festival to be held May 15, when she will be borne aloft on a palanquin to lead a parade in Heian Period (794-1185) costume through the streets of Kyoto.

　palanquin /p`ælənkíːn/ を取り上げます。to lead a paradeとあることから、行事に使われる何かであることはわかりましたが、予想が難しかったのでさっそく調べてみました。手持ち紙辞書には記載がありませんでしたが、スマートフォン内蔵の辞書『ジーニアス英和辞典MX増補版』には「（昔の中国などの中に椅子やベッドがある１人乗りの）かご、日本のかごは通例basket （work）〜」とありました。

　Merriam-Websterには “a conveyance formerly used especially in eastern Asia usually for one person that consists of an enclosed litter borne on the shoulders of men by means of poles” と定義されています。

　他にもかごを表す英語としてlitter /líṭɚ/ があり、そちらは「（史）（屋根、カーテン付きの）担いかご（金持ち、権力者などが乗った）」（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版　大修館書店）と説明されています。かごにもいくつかの言い方があるので、押さえておきたいと思いました。（aqua）
