Scientists have unearthed a dark secret in Peru.

The skeletal remains of more than 140 children and 200 baby llamas were found on the country's northern coast. It may be evidence of the largest child sacrifice in history, according to an exclusive report by National Geographic, released Thursday on its website. The remains of a man and two women were also found.

　今回調べた単語はunearth / `ʌnˈɚːθ /です。earthにそれを否定する接頭辞が付いているなんて面白いと思って調べてみました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版,大修館書店）には「…を掘り出す,発掘する」や「…を明るみに出す,あばく;…を発見する」や「〈キツネなど〉を穴から追い出す」とありました。LDOCEにはto find something after searching for it, especially something that has been buried in the ground or lost for a long timeやto find information or the truth about something or someoneとありました。この記事にピッタリの単語だと思います。

　ある程度予想はしていましたが、やはりearthの動詞形にはunearthと直接的に関係するような意味はなく「〈回路・機器など〉を接地する」という意味でした。しかし名詞で「（キツネなどの）穴」という意味があるようです。またgo to earthで「〈キツネなどが〉（穴に）姿をくらます,〈人が隠れる,逃げ込む〉」というものやrun O to earth「〈キツネなど〉を穴に追い込む,〈人・物〉をくまなく捜して見つけ出す」というものがあると記載されていました。(rain)
