Japan, U.S. working to denuclearize North by ’20

The Japanese and U.S. governments are working together to completely denuclearize North Korea by 2020 while U.S. President Donald Trump is still in office, it has been learned.

As Trump’s presidential term expires in January 2021, both governments intend to urge North Korea to verifiably abandon its nuclear program by setting a deadline, according to Japanese government sources.

In the past, North Korea has been permitted to continue its nuclear and missile development despite agreeing to denuclearize. With this in mind, Japan and the United States will not ease pressure on Pyongyang unless it takes specific actions such as the destruction of nuclear facilities, with an eye to achieving its denuclearization in a short period, the sources said.

The two countries will also cooperate with South Korea on the matter.
